Case Story: Naval vessels
Although global regulations exclude naval vessels from stringent environmental requirements, Navies around the world are making efforts to minimize the impact of their activities on the marine environment. With frequent long periods between port calls, management of waste can be challenging. Many Navies have consulted Uson Marine and now have highly efficient dry waste, and food and galley waste handling systems onboard that reduce waste handling costs and increase operational flexibility.
Navies are often required to participate in unilateral task forces, such as the international rescue squad formed in 2009 to assist vessels attacked by pirates off the coast of Somalia. Known as Combined Task Force 150 (CTF-150) and EU NAVFOR. This included ships from the U.S., French, German, British, Canadian, Danish, People's Republic of China and other nations' Navies.
In such situations, Naval fleets are stimulated in their contacts with other Navies and the general public worldwide, to maintain the highest standards in every respect, including environmental management. Accordingly, many Navies upgrade their vessels to higher environmental standards, including equipping them with advanced waste handling systems.
Dry waste compacted and landed ashore
Naval ships often have large numbers of people embarked and generate large volumes of waste. Onboard it pays to separate dry waste fractions at source and shred, crush or compact them to reduce their volume.
Installed onboard Naval ships around the world Uson Marine chute systems are used to transport different waste fractions to the garbage room. There, marine compactors, baling presses, shredders and crushers reduce the volume of the waste by up to 90 percent (depending on the fraction). The compacted fractions are stored separately for recycling in port.
The volume reductions minimize the amount of storage space required onboard and reduce landing and disposal costs onshore.
Hygienic handling of food and galley
Many naval vessels are also equipped with Uson Marine food and galley waste handling solutions. With a large number of people onboard, it is essential to have an effective food waste handling system. Food and galley waste needs to be collected and stored in a hygienic and controlled way.
A popular Uson solution is a One Way Macerator System, comprising local macerator units in the galley and one or more holding tanks. The system grinds the food waste to particles less than 25 mm in size and transports it by vacuum to the closed holding tank. The holding tank offers hygienic, odour-free storage until the food waste can be landed or discharged overboard. It also allows the system to be operated in port and in areas where discharge overboard is not permitted.
A Uson Dewatering Unit installed downstream of the holding tank can be used to reduce the volume of the food waste when the vessel is in areas where discharge to the sea is prohibited for extended periods. A Uson UGS Grease Separator is often installed to treat galley grey water from the scuppers and sinks before it is discharged to the grey water tank.
